6 AS INTRODUCED

7 A Resolution recognizing Weatherford’s space-related
7 history; and naming Weatherford the Space City of
8 Oklahoma.

11 WHEREAS, Weatherford is the hometown of NASA astronaut Thomas P.
11
12 Stafford, who served as commander of the Apollo 10 mission and flew
12
13 six rendezvous in space, logging more than 507 hours of space flight
13
14 during his career; and
14
15 WHEREAS, the Stafford Air and Space Museum in Weatherford
15
16 showcases flown aircraft, full-scale replicas of famous planes and
16
17 spacecraft, and an educational center, among other attractions; and
17
18 WHEREAS, the City of Weatherford, its residents, community
18
19 organizations, and volunteers are committed to promoting tourism
19
20 during and beyond the statewide Route 66 Centennial Celebration in
20
21 2026; and
21
22 WHEREAS, Weatherford’s prime location along Route 66 will
22
23 largely increase tourism during the Route 66 Centennial, providing
23

 1 countless opportunities to showcase the city and state’s space-

2 related history.

3 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE 2ND SESSION

4 OF THE 59TH OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE:

5 THAT the Oklahoma State Senate recognizes Weatherford’s rich
5
6 history related to space.
6
7 THAT the Oklahoma State Senate designates Weatherford as the
7
8 official “Space City of Oklahoma”.
