7 An Act relating to schools; directing the State
7 Department of Education to develop type 1 diabetes
8 informational materials; requiring periodic update of
8 materials; mandating materials be made available on
9 Department website; requiring school districts and
9 charter schools to make materials accessible at
10 specified times; providing for content of materials;
10 providing for codification; providing an effective
11 date; and declaring an emergency.

15 BE IT ENACTED BY THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF OKLAHOMA:

16 SECTION 1. NEW LAW A new section of law to be codified
16
17 in the Oklahoma Statutes as Section 1210.196 of Title 70, unless
17
18 there is created a duplication in numbering, reads as follows:
18
19 A. The State Department of Education, in coordination with any
19
20 other entity the Department deems appropriate, shall develop type 1
20
21 diabetes informational materials for parents and guardians of
21
22 students. The informational materials shall undergo periodic
22
23 updates as necessary and shall be made available to each school
23
24 district and charter school through the Department's website.

1 B. Beginning August 1, 2024, the school district board of

2 education and governing board of a charter school shall make copies
2
3 of the type 1 diabetes informational materials accessible to the
3
4 parent or guardian of a student when the student is initially
4
5 enrolled in the school and when the student enters sixth grade.
5
6 C. The type 1 diabetes informational materials may include, but
6
7 not be limited to, the following:
7
8 1. A description of type 1 diabetes;
8
9 2. A description of the risk factors and warning signs
9
10 associated with type 1 diabetes;
10
11 3. A recommendation for students who display warning signs
11
12 associated with type 1 diabetes that the parent or guardian should
12
13 immediately consult with the student's primary care provider to
13
14 determine if immediate screening for type 1 diabetes is appropriate;
14
15 4. A description of the screening process for type 1 diabetes,
15
16 the significance of its stages, and the implications of test results
16
17 identifying the presence of each state of type 1 diabetes; and
17
18 5. A recommendation that, following a type 1 diabetes
18
19 diagnosis, the parent or guardian should consult with the student's
19
20 primary care provider to develop an appropriate treatment plan,
20
21 which may include consultation with and examination by a specialty
21
22 care provider, such as a properly qualified endocrinologist.

23 SECTION 2. This act shall become effective July 1, 2024.

1 SECTION 3. It being immediately necessary for the preservation
1
2 of the public peace, health or safety, an emergency is hereby
2
3 declared to exist, by reason whereof this act shall take effect and
3
4 be in full force from and after its passage and approval.
