7 AS INTRODUCED
8 A Resolution proclaiming April as National Poetry
Month; and encouraging the observation and
9 celebration of National Poetry Month.

12 WHEREAS, the Academy of American Poets established the month of
13 April as National Poetry Month in 1996; and
14 WHEREAS, National Poetry Month seeks to highlight the
15 extraordinary legacy and ongoing achievement of American poets,
16 introduce Americans to the pleasures and benefits of reading poetry,
17 bring poets and poetry to the public in immediate and innovative
18 ways, and make poetry an important part of our children's education;
19 and
20 WHEREAS, National Poetry Month, under the leadership and
21 direction of the Academy of American Poets, is now the largest
22 literary celebration in the world; and
23 WHEREAS, poetry enhances and enriches the lives of all
24 Americans; and

1 WHEREAS, poetry, as an essential part of the arts and
2 humanities, affects every aspect of life in America today, including
3 education, the economy, and community pride and development; and
4 WHEREAS, poetry has produced some of the nation's leading
5 creative artists and has inspired other artists in fields such as
6 music, theatre, film, dance, and the visual arts.
7 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
8 OF THE 1ST SESSION OF THE 59TH OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE:
9 THAT April 1 through April 30, 2023, is hereby proclaimed to be
10 National Poetry Month in Oklahoma.
11 THAT public officials, educators, librarians, and all the people
12 of Oklahoma are encouraged to observe this month, to celebrate the
13 cultural riches our state has to offer and to recognize the
14 important role of poetry in creating and sustaining this great
15 nation with appropriate ceremonies, activities, and programs.
