The proposed bill, known as the No Free Advertising for Politicians Act, seeks to enact section 9.031 of the Revised Code, which prohibits the use of public funds for displaying signs that include the personal name or likeness of current public officials. The bill defines "public official" as anyone elected or appointed to a state or political subdivision office and outlines specific types of displays that are restricted, including road signs, billboards, and exterior signage on buildings or vehicles. Exceptions are made for items that only include the title or position of a public official or those specifically authorized by law to include a public official's name or likeness.
Additionally, the bill mandates that public offices or agencies must remove or modify any existing signs that violate this new regulation as soon as practicable after the law takes effect. However, it clarifies that this requirement does not apply to legally required approvals or security seals placed before the law's effective date, which will be subject to the new regulations upon expiration. Violations of this section will result in penalties as outlined in section 3599.40 of the Revised Code.
