The bill, known as the Food Literacy and Nutrition Education Act, amends section 3301.0718 and enacts section 3301.0733 of the Revised Code. It requires the Department of Education and Workforce to adopt food literacy standards for students in grades kindergarten through twelve by December 31, 2026. The new standards will be based on a review of current national and state standards and will provide guidance on making informed healthy food choices, meal preparation, and understanding food production. The Department is also authorized to revise these standards as necessary.
Additionally, the bill stipulates that once the food literacy standards are adopted, they must be posted on the Department's website and shared with all relevant educational institutions, including school districts and community schools. Each district or school is required to make the standards publicly accessible and may choose to incorporate them into their curriculum. Furthermore, parents or guardians can request that their child be excused from food literacy instruction, but this does not exempt students from other health education requirements or high school graduation criteria. The existing section 3301.0718 is repealed as part of this legislative change.
