The 136th General Assembly of Ohio has introduced a concurrent resolution supporting the establishment of a new Veterans Administration National Cemetery on state-owned land in Chillicothe. This location is historically significant, as it was the site of Camp Sherman during World War I, which trained over 40,000 soldiers and included a substantial hospital complex. Following the war, Chillicothe became home to the first hospital operated by the Veterans Bureau, and it currently houses the Chillicothe VA Medical Center.
The resolution emphasizes that the land north and west of the existing VA facility is suitable for a national cemetery, which would be managed by the National Cemetery Administration of the Department of Veterans Affairs. The resolution calls for the Clerk of the House to send copies to the Governor, the U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs, the Advisory Committee on Cemeteries and Memorials, and Ohio media outlets, thereby promoting awareness and support for the initiative.
