The 136th General Assembly of Ohio has adopted a concurrent resolution recognizing the significant impact of the ongoing lifeguard shortage in the state. This shortage has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which hindered training opportunities for potential lifeguards, leading to closures and reduced hours at many public pools, beaches, and water parks. As a result, many municipalities are struggling to staff these facilities adequately, which compromises safety and limits access to essential swimming and safety training programs.
In response to this crisis, the resolution encourages individuals to consider pursuing a career as a lifeguard, highlighting the competitive wages—averaging $18 per hour with a projected increase of 12% over the next five years—as well as additional benefits such as paid training and flexible scheduling. The resolution aims to raise awareness about the importance of lifeguards in ensuring public safety and to motivate more people to enter this vital profession. Copies of the resolution will be sent to the Governor of Ohio and the state's news media to further disseminate this message.
