135th General Assembly
Regular Session S. R. No. 443
2023-2024
Senator Manning
A RESOLUTION
Honoring the Village of Wakeman on its celebration of the
One Hundredth Anniversary of the founding of the
Wakeman Country Club.
WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the 135th General Assembly 1
of Ohio are pleased to pay tribute to the Village of Wakeman on its 2
efforts to commemorate the One Hundredth Anniversary of the 3
establishment of the Wakeman Country Club; and 4
WHEREAS, This is, indeed, an important occasion, and it provides 5
an ideal time to acknowledge the unique story and enduring legacy of 6
one of the area’s most historically significant sites. Established in 7
1924 by Garrett A. Morgan, the Wakeman Country Club was one of the 8
earliest recreation clubs in Ohio to be created specifically for use 9
by the local African American communities, and it offered a wealth of 10
recreational options, including camping, horseback riding, hunting, 11
fishing, swimming, a dance hall, and an amphitheater for exhibitions; 12
and 13
WHEREAS, A truly pioneering institution, the Wakeman Country Club 14
enhanced the quality of life not only within the Greater Cleveland 15
area but also for the residents of Erie, Huron, and Lorain counties, 16
and during its years of operation, it gained the appreciation of 17
countless visitors. While the club’s original structures have been 18
lost to the march of time, its memory has not faded from the Wakeman 19
community, as exemplified by the recent placement of an Ohio 20
Historical Marker in its honor, and clearly, such a remarkable legacy 21
is deserving of applause; and 22
WHEREAS, The civic leaders and administrators of the Village of 23
Wakeman are to be commended for their tremendous efforts to organize 24

this commemoration, and we salute them as truly history-conscious 25
Ohioans. By acknowledging the tremendous impact of the Wakeman Country 26
Club, they have helped sustain the heritage of the area, and we hope 27
that their commitment to preservation will inspire local residents to 28
reflect more closely upon the colorful past that makes up our state; 29
therefore be it 30
RESOLVED, That we, the members of the Senate of the 135th General 31
Assembly of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, extend special 32
recognition to the Village of Wakeman on this Centennial commemoration 33
and salute all those involved as fine Ohioans; and be it further 34
RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit a duly 35
authenticated copy of this Resolution to the Village of Wakeman. 36
