A RESOLUTION
In memory of Marigene Valiquette.
WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the 135th General Assembly 1
of Ohio were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Marigene 2
Valiquette and extend our heartfelt condolences to her family and 3
friends; and 4
WHEREAS, Marigene Valiquette left an indelible impression on the 5
people whose lives she touched, and she will be remembered as a 6
spirited individual who contributed immeasurably to the world around 7
her. A devoted public servant, she was a member of the Ohio House of 8
Representatives for six years and then the Ohio Senate for eighteen 9
years, and during her twenty-four years in office, she served as chair 10
of the Senate Judiciary, Ethics, and Ways and Means committees, a 11
member of the Senate Finance and Rules committees, and floor leader. 12
The longest-serving woman in the Ohio General Assembly, she was a 13
champion for the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment in Ohio, and 14
her passionate advocacy for the causes she held dear, including women, 15
children, and labor issues, earned her the respect of her peers; and 16
WHEREAS, Marigene Valiquette’s regard for improving the quality of 17
life in our society was clearly evident in her personal sacrifices of 18
time and effort to her family, friends, and community. A remarkable 19
Ohioan, she displayed exceptional concern and insight in all her 20
endeavors, and she received numerous accolades, including induction 21
into the Women’s Hall of Fame, the 1978 Outstanding Legislator Award 22

As Introduced
from the Ohio Trial Lawyers Association, the Headliner Award from 23
Women in Communications, the Foundation Award from the ACLU of Ohio, 24
the Humanitarian Award from Dynamic Leadership, Inc., and the 25
Democratic Woman of the Year Award from the Federated Democratic Women 26
of Ohio. Clearly, her absence will be keenly felt; and 27
WHEREAS, In numerous roles, Marigene Valiquette always used her 28
talents to the benefit of others, and the laurels of her life stand as 29
a tribute not only to her but also to those she left behind. Although 30
the void her death has created can never be filled, the legacy of care 31
and commitment she established will surely live on. The world is a 32
richer place for her having been in it, and she will be sorely missed; 33
therefore be it 34
RESOLVED, That we, the members of the Senate of the 135th General 35
Assembly of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, express a profound 36
sense of loss and sincere regret at the death of Marigene Valiquette 37
and, in so doing, pay tribute to the memory of a truly unique woman; 38
and be it further 39
RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit a duly 40
authenticated copy of this Resolution to the family of Marigene 41
Valiquette. 42
