                        A RESOLUTION
              To recognize the sovereignty of the Republic of             1
                Cyprus over the entirety of the island, and to            2
                memorialize the 50th anniversary of the Turkish           3
                invasion and occupation of the northern part of           4
                the island.                                               5
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF
OHIO:
    WHEREAS, On July 20, 1974, Turkish troops invaded the                 6
island of Cyprus and captured and occupied the northern part of           7
the island; and                                                           8
    WHEREAS, The Turkish invasion ended in the partition of               9
Cyprus along the UN-monitored Green Line, which still divides             10
Cyprus; and                                                               11
    WHEREAS, United Nations Security Council Resolution 360,              12
adopted on August 16, 1974, declared the Council's respect for            13
the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of the           14
Republic of Cyprus, and formally recorded its disapproval of the          15
unilateral military actions taken against it by Turkey; and               16
    WHEREAS, In 1983, the Turkish Cypriot assembly declared               17
independence of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.                  18
Immediately upon this declaration, Britain convened a meeting of          19
the United Nations Security Council to condemn the declaration            20

as "legally invalid." United Nations Security Council Resolution            21
541 (1983) stated the "attempt to create the Turkish Republic of            22
Northern Cyprus is invalid, and will contribute to a worsening              23
of the situation in Cyprus"; now therefore be it                            24
      RESOLVED, That we, the members of the House of                        25
Representatives of the 135th General Assembly of the State of               26
Ohio, in adopting this resolution, recognize the sovereignty of             27
the Republic of Cyprus over the entirety of the island; and be              28
it further                                                                  29
      RESOLVED, That we memorialize the 50th anniversary of the             30
Turkish invasion and occupation of the northern part of the                 31
island; and be it further                                                   32
      RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives              33
transmit a duly authenticated copy of this resolution to the                34
Ambassador of Cyprus at the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in            35
the United States, to the Ohio Congressional delegation, and to             36
the news media of Ohio.                                                     37
