TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the highway law, in relation to dedicating a portion of
the state highway system to Chief Hugh (Chaim) Jacobson
PURPOSE:
Designates that portion of the state highway system constituting state
route three hundred six in the town of Ramapo, county of Rockland,
between Grandview Avenue and Viola Road, shall be dedicated to Chief
Hugh (Chaim) Jacobson.
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new section 345-e to
read as follows: § 345-e. Portion of the state highway system to be
dedicated as the Chief Hugh (Chaim) Jacobson Memorial Highway. All that
portion of the state highway system constituting state route three
hundred six in the town of Ramapo, county of Rockland, between Grandview
Avenue and Viola Road, shall be dedicated to Chief Hugh (Chaim) Jacob-
son.
Section 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the
installation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway
system as dedicated pursuant to section one of this act, provided that
such signing shall state "Highway Dedicated to Chief Hugh (Chaim) Jacob-
son". However, to avoid confusion and to limit any possible disruption
of commerce, the dedication called for pursuant to section one of this
act shall be one of ceremonial nature and the official name of such
highway shall not be changed as a result of this act.
JUSTIFICATION:
Chief Hugh (Chaim) Jacobson was a longtime member, past Chief of Depart-
ment, and, until his passing, active First Assistant Chief ("7-2") of
the Monsey Fire Department's Brewer Fire Engine Company No. 1. Hugh
joined the department approximately 28 years ago, inspired by his late
father, who was also a longtime member. This highway renaming will honor
Chief Jacobson's nearly three decades of heroic service to the Monsey
Fire Department and the people it serves.
