BILL NUMBER: S9177
SPONSOR: HINCHEY
TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the state law, in relation to designating the state red
wine grape
PURPOSE:
To designate cabernet franc as the official red wine grape of New York
State.
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section one adds a new section 94 to the state law that designates
cabernet franc as the official red wine grape of the state of New York.
Section two sets the effective date.
JUSTIFICATION:
The Cabernet Franc grape thrives in New York state's cool climate. From
Long Island, to the Hudson Valley, to Western New York, you can find
this winter-hardy grape not just being grown, but thriving. When Caber-
net Franc is grown in a region like New York's, the wine produced from
it is herbaceous and can have notes of berries, cherries or even bell
peppers. Since this grape is uniquely suited to the climate of our state
and is widely grown already, we should recognize its status as the offi-
cial red wine grape of New York State.
LEGISLATIVE HISTORY:
New bill.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS:
None to the state.
EFFECTIVE DATE:
This act shall take effect immediately.
