BILL NUMBER: S9109
SPONSOR: PALUMBO
TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the criminal procedure law, in relation to granting
peace officer status to persons employed by the town of Southold serving
on Fishers Island as public safety officers
PURPOSE:
To grant public safety officers employed by the town of Southold that
serve on Fishers Island to be designated as peace officers.
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1. Section 2.10 of the criminal procedure law is amended by
adding a new subdivision 88 authorizing the designation of peace officer
status to those public safety officers employed by the town of Southold
serving on Fishers Island. Subdivision 2. Sets forth the effective
date.
JUSTIFICATION:
Back in 2023, the New York State Police suspended their law enforcement
coverage of Fishers Island and The Southold Town Police Department has
assumed those law enforcement duties. However, there are times when only
1 officer is on the Island.
The need for additional peace officers is primarily due to its remote,
isolated location. There is a need for 'specialized local law enforce-
ment for year-round security, visitor management and emergency response.
They provide necessary community policing, handle and manage public
safety on an island accessible only by ferry. More, officers will
provide a consistent and visible presence for crime prevention and
public safety.
