TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the highway law, in relation to dedicating a portion of
the state highway system to Trooper Gerard B. Kane and Trooper Arthur A.
Reddy
 
PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL:
Dedicates a portion of the state highway system to Trooper Gerard B.
Kane and Trooper Arthur B. Reddy.
 
SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS:
Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new section 344-s to
read as follows: § 344s. Portion of the state highway system to be dedi-
cated to Trooper Gerard B. Kane and Trooper Arthur A. Reddy. The bridge
over the Southern State Parkway on Deer Park Avenue between Parkdale
Drive and Sylvan Road in the town of Babylon, county of Suffolk, shall
be dedicated to Trooper Gerard B. Kane and Trooper Arthur A. Reddy.
§ 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the installa-
tion and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system as
dedicated pursuant to section one of this act, provided that such sign-
ing shall state "Bridge Dedicated to Trooper Gerard B Kane and Trooper
Arthur A Reddy". However, to avoid confusion and to limit any possible
disruption of commerce, the dedication called for pursuant to section
one of this act shall be one of ceremonial nature and the official name
of such bridge shall not be changed as a result of this act.
 
JUSTIFICATION:
Trooper Gerard B. Kane and Trooper Arthur B. Reddy died instantly on
November 15, 1937 when their automobile stuck a tree while responding to
a report of criminal mischief to equipment used to build the Parkway
system on Long Island. Their car left a dirt road adjacent to Deer Park
Avenue in the Town of Babylon. He was thrown from the open touring car
as it struck a clump of trees. Trooper Kane and his partner were enroute
to a criminal mischief complaint when the accident occurred. This legis-
lation is to pay tribute to Trooper Gerard B. Kane and Trooper Arthur B.
Reddy for their honorable and heroic service.
