BILL NUMBER: S8688
SPONSOR: CLEARE

TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in
relation to requiring notification of residents who are potentially
affected by a serious health threat to their water system

PURPOSE:
That legislation requires that, within the City of New York, where a
investigation indicates a serious health threat-such as Legionnaire's
Disease-timely notification be given to all potentially affected resi-
dents within 24 hours, including all adjacent buildings that share the
same underlying water system.

SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Requires that, within the City of New York, where a investigation indi-
cates a serious health threat-such as Legionnaire's Disease-timely
notification be given to all potentially affected residents within 24
hours, including all adjacent buildings that share the same underlying
water system.

JUSTIFICATION:
Sadly, Legionella cases continue to persist in New York city and else-
where, even in colder months. Our laws do not mandate timely notifica-
tion of the potentially affected community, and this leads to rumor,
chaos and fear. Timely notification, from governmental sources can quell
situations and allow people to prepare and take preventive measures.
