BILL NUMBER: S8679
SPONSOR: RYAN C
TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the tax law, in relation to authorizing an occupancy tax
in the city of Oswego; and providing for the repeal of such provisions
upon the expiration thereof
PURPOSE::
To authorize the City of Oswego (Oswego County), to impose a hotel/motel
occupancy tax up to three percent.
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS::
Section 1. The tax law is amended by adding a new section 1202-zz-3.
Section 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
JUSTIFICATION::
As tourism continues to grow as a vital part of Oswego's economy, the
expenses of sustaining and enhancing our appeal are significant. Reven-
ue from an occupancy tax would help offset these costs, support public
safety, and strengthen our ability to welcome new tourism opportunities.
For example, American Cruise Lines has recently announced that the City
of Oswego will serve as the starting location next year for several
nine-day cruises on Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. A local bed tax would
provide critical funding for the infrastructure improvements necessary
to host ventures of this scale and ensure Oswego remains competitive as
a destination.
LEGISLATIVE HISTORY::
New bill
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS::
None to the state
EFFECTIVE DATE::
This act shall take effect immediately and shall expire December 31,
2028.
