BILL NUMBER: S8485
SPONSOR: WEBER

TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the penal law, in relation to criminal impersonation in
the first degree

PURPOSE:
This bill would create a new section of criminal impersonation in the
first degree when an individual impersonates a firefighter and while
doing so obstructs emergency operations.

SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section one amends Section 190.26 of the penal law to add a new section
related to the impersonation of a firefighter.
Section two is the effective date.

JUSTIFICATION:
There are several instances in New York where individuals have imperso-
nated fire fighters and by doing so obstructed the operations of first
responders at the scene of an emergency. Individuals impersonating fire-
fighters put both first responders and the public at risk by making it
more difficult for trained emergency personnel to respond to emergency
situations.

LEGISLATIVE HISTORY:

EFFECTIVE DATE:
This act shall take effect on the ninetieth day after it shall have
become a law.
