TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the highway law, in relation to dedicating a portion of
the state highway system to William Cornell
 
PURPOSE:
Amend the highway law in relation to dedicating a portion of the state
highway system to William Cornell.
 
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1. the highway law is amended by adding a new section 345-d to
read as follows:
§ 345-d. Portion of state highway system to be dedicated to William
Cornell. The walking path on the northbound side of the Wantagh State
Parkway from route twenty-seven to Jerusalem Avenue in the hamlet of
Wantagh in the town of Hempstead, county of Nassau, shall be dedicated
to William Cornell.
§ 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the installa-
tion and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system as
dedicated pursuant to section one of this act, provided that such sign-
ing shall state "William Cornell memorial trail."
§ 3. This act shall take effect immediately.
 
JUSTIFICATION:
William Cornell was an eighth-grade honors student at Wantagh Junior
High School who, on September 21, 1982, was killed when a vehicle skid-
ded out of control and struck the boy as he was running on the path with
his teammates on the school's cross-country team. The designation of the
path in his honor pays tribute to his memory and life tragically cut
short.
