BILL NUMBER: S8450
SPONSOR: PERSAUD
TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the election law and the administrative code of the city
of New York, in relation to allowing certain campaign funds to be used
for disability access services and language interpretation and trans-
lation services
PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL:
Allows certain campaign funds to be used for accessibility services
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Amends the election law and the administrative code of the city of New
York, in relation. to allowing disability access services and language
interpretation and translation services.
JUSTIFICATION:
Under current yaw there are few expenses not subject to the Campaign
Finance Board limit. Campaigns should not be penalized for wanting to
meet, accommodate, and support a more diverse group of New Yorkers.
Making campaigns accessible A inclusive to all New Yorkers should not
feel like luxury cost. Reframing the New York City Campaign Finance
Board language exempting accessibility and inclusion costs, including
American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation, from the Matching Funds
Program's limits will bring more people into the political process, by
not leaving them out. Until we exempt disability and language accessi-
bility costs from the capped spending limits New York City's democracy
will not be all inclusive.
