TITLE OF BILL:
An act in relation to a feasibility study and report on the potential
reestablishment of the empire state summer games
PURPOSE:
The purpose of this bill is to enable the New York State Office of
Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the Department of
Economic Development to conduct a feasibility study on the economic
impact of reestablishing the Empire State Summer Games.
SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS:
Section 1 provides specifics on the scope of the feasibility study as
well as a deadline for it to be submitted to the Governor, the temporary
president of the Senate, and the speaker of the Assembly. The study
will report on the expected costs and revenue that the games would bring
in.
Section 2 provides an effective date.
JUSTIFICATION:
The Empire State Games are a storied part of New York's history, dating
back to their inception in 1978. The games helped establish New York as
a global sporting destination and served as a major economic driver for
the communities that hosted the events. Unfortunately, the Empire State
Summer Games have not been held in full since 2010. This bill will exam-
ine the state's economic landscape and report on the possibility of
restoration of the summer games, and examine the potential economic
impact of such an endeavor.
