BILL NUMBER: S8392
SPONSOR: MATTERA

TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the criminal procedure law, in relation to designating
uniformed officers of the fire marshal's office of the town of Hunting-
ton as peace officers

PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL:
This bill would designate uniformed officers who serve in the fire
marshal's office in the town of Huntington as peace officers.

SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1: amends subdivision 63 of section 2.10 of the criminal proce-
dure law, as amended by chapter 638 of the laws of 2003.
Section 2: sets the effective date.

JUSTIFICATION:
The Town of Huntington Fire Marshal's Office frequently collaborates
with the Suffolk County Police Department's Second Precinct on special
operations. Given the difficult nature of these assignments, providing
peace officer status to the uniformed officers of the fire marshal's
office will provide essential protection for these public servants,
particularly during emergencies and sensitive enforcement operations. It
will also give the uniformed officers of the Town of Huntington Fire
Marshal's Office parity with neighboring jurisdictions that currently
have peace officer status including the towns of Islip, Babylon, Smith-
town, Brookhaven, Riverhead and Southampton.
