BILL NUMBER: S8336
SPONSOR: BASKIN

TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the criminal procedure law, in relation to granting
peace officer status to certain Erie county employees

PURPOSE:
The purpose of this bill is to grant park rangers and building security
in Erie County the status of peace officer.

SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS:
Section 1: Amends section 2.10 of the criminal procedure law by adding a
new subdivision 88.
Section 2: Effective date.

JUSTIFICATION:
This bill will allow Erie County building security, within the Depart-
ment of Homeland Security, and Erie County Park Rangers, within the
Department of Parks, Recreation, and Forestry, who are trained and
certified as peace officers, to have the legal means to write citations
on county property. The designation of peace officer status for these
roles is a practical step to enhance public safety, improve emergency
response capabilities, and ensure a more secure environment within coun-
ty-owned facilities.
Moreover, granting peace officer status in these roles will alleviate
the burden on the Erie County Sheriff's Office by allowing low-level
offenses and routine security matters to be handled directly by trained
county personnel. This bill will also provide security to county facili-
ties which currently lack staff
