TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the highway law, in relation to dedicating a portion of
the state highway system in the village of Unionville, county of Orange,
to the Appalachian Trail
PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL:
To dedicate a portion of the state highway system in the village of
Unionville to the Appalachian Trail.
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1: Amends the highway law by adding a new section 344-r to state
that a portion of the state highway system shall be dedicated to the
Appalachian Trail.
Section 2: The Commissioner of Transportation shall provide for the
installation and maintenance of signage. This naming is ceremonial, and
the official name of the highway will not be changed to avoid confusion.
Section 3: Sets effective date
JUSTIFICATION:
This section of Route 284 in Unionville was once part of the original
Appalachian Trail. In recognition of New York State's significant role
in founding our nation and its rich historical heritage, it would be
appropriate to dedicate a portion of Route 284 to the Appalachian Trail.
