BILL NUMBER: S7703
SPONSOR: OBERACKER
TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the education law, in relation to the provision of
transportation after 4pm by school districts in Sullivan county
PURPOSE:
This bill provides for transportation after 4pm for private schools in
Sullivan County.
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1 amends education law by adding a new section 3627-a. Section 2
establishes the effective date.
JUSTIFICATION:
Too often, conflicts between public and private school schedules create
unacceptable gaps in transportation, leaving students without reliable
access to their education. Private schools do not operate on the same
schedules as public schools so why would we want public schools setting
the transportation schedule for private school students? Transportation
is not just a convenience, it is a fundamental part of ensuring every
child can learn, and New York State has an obligation to provide it.
All students, regardless of whether they attend public or private
school, deserve dependable transportation. While New York City schools
already operate under this mandate, it's time for the Sullivan County
community to receive the same support. No child should be left without a
way to get to and from school.
