TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the education law, in relation to authorizing medical
assistants to administer vaccinations
 
PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL:
Allows medical assistants to administer vaccinations provided they have
received adequate training and are adequately supervised.
 
SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS:
Section 1: Amends Section 6527 of the education law by adding a new
subdivision 12 to read as follows: 12. Notwithstanding any other law, or
regulation to the contrary, physicians, nurse practitioners, and physi-
cian assistants shall be authorized to delegate the task of drawing up
and administering vaccinations to medical assistants in an office
setting provided that (a) such vaccinations are recommended by the
federal advisory committee for immunization practices and the center for
disease control and prevention and (b) such medical assistants receive
appropriate training and adequate supervision in administering immuniza-
tions pursuant to regulations determined by the commissioner.
Section 2: Establishes the effective date.
 
JUSTIFICATION:
This bill would allow medical assistants to provide immunizations
following appropriate training and adequate supervision. This bill
provides further access to immunizations while ensuring that they are
administered in a safe way, allowing patients to receive vaccinations
quicker, the more people that are trained, the more people that can be
seen.
