TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the education law, in relation to granting academic
credit at state operated institutions of the state university of New
York and the senior colleges of the city university of New York to
volunteer firefighters and emergency medical technicians
PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL:
This legislation would give college course credit to volunteer fire-
fighters and emergency medical technicians for performing volunteer
activities and completing training and development courses taken in
connection with their volunteer services.
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1 amends the education law by adding section, 669-i.
§ 669-i adds course credit for volunteer firefighters and emergency
medical technicians.
Section 2. Establishes every volunteer firefighter and emergency medical
technician enrolled on a full-time basis as an undergraduate student in
good standing shall be granted up to three academic credits per year and
six credits in the aggregate towards their degree.
Section 3. The board of trustees of the state university of New York and
the city university of New York shall adopt a policy to implement the
provisions of this section
§ 2. Sets the effective date.
JUSTIFICATION:
This bill would promote volunteerism among the youth and give those
volunteers an incentive to continue their education. Specifically, the
bill grants SUNY and CUNY students 3 course credits per year, with a
maximum of 6 credits in total, towards their undergraduate elective
course requirements for performing volunteer firefighter services and
completing related training.

This act shall take effect on the first of July next succeeding the date
on which it shall have become a law.
