TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the arts and cultural affairs law, in relation to
empowering the council on the arts to designate the Harlem Renaissance
Cultural District
 
PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL:
To empower the Council on the Arts to designate the Harlem Renaissance
Cultural District.
 
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Amends the arts and cultural affairs law to empower the Council on the
Arts to designate the Harlem Renaissance Cultural District.
 
JUSTIFICATION:
The proposed Harlem Renaissance Cultural District in New York County is
home to a large diverse population with a rich cultural history that
stretches back at least 100 years. The Harlem Renaissance is generally
defined as an intellectual and cultural revival of Black music, dance,
art, fashion, literature, theater, politics and scholarship centered in
Harlem, Manhattan, New York City, spanning the 1920s and 1930s, commenc-
ing around 1925-making 2025 the 100th Anniversary. With such a momentous
anniversary about to occur, the designation of a Harlem Renaissance
Cultural District is one of the prime ways that we can ensure that
support for celebrations, events and remembrances.
