BILL NUMBER: S7082
SPONSOR: LANZA
TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in
relation to designating the borough of Staten Island as the "borough of
parks"
PURPOSE:
Provides that the borough of Staten Island shall also be known and
designated as the "Borough of Parks."
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section one amends subdivision 5 of section 2-202 of the administrative
code of the city of New York, to designate the borough of Staten Island,
known as Richmond county to be known as the "Borough of Parks."
Section two is an immediate effective date.
JUSTIFICATION:
This legislation would formally recognize Staten Island as the 'Borough
of Parks' in statute. This measure will promote Staten Island parks
which are comprised of over 7,400 acres of parkland. This amount
comprises of twenty-five percent of New York City's total parkland. The
Borough of Staten Island and its parks are unique. Staten Island has
sixty-two playgrounds and over sixty ball fields for families to
throughout the year. Staten Island is unique in that it has more park
space than any of the boroughs in the City of New York. Open space is
something that Staten Islanders value and have worked hard to preserve.
This bill would recognize this great asset and it should be known not
only to the residents of New York State but the millions of tourists who
visit New York City every year.
