BILL NUMBER: S6671
SPONSOR: JACKSON
TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the retirement and social security law, in relation to
authorizing a thirty year retirement benefit for certain members in
Nassau county
PURPOSE:
This bill would modify the service retirement benefit those members of
the Employees Retirement System who are employed by Nassau County in a
correction officer title. This bill allows such members to receive an
additional pension benefit upon completion of thirty years of service.
SUMMARY OF PROVISION:
Section 1 - Subdivisions c, g and h of section 89-g of the retirement
and social security law, as added by chapter 653 of the laws of 1988
such section as renumbered by chapter 771 of the laws of 1988, which
seeks to ensure Nassau County Correction Officers to obtain a 30 year
retirement
JUSTIFICATION:
Currently, members of the retirement system employed by Nassau County
within a correction officer title do not receive additional service
retirement benefits for service rendered beyond twenty-five years.
Retention of experienced correction officers remains an important tool
for the safe and orderly functioning of Nassau County's local correc-
tional facility. Allowing members of the correction officer titles to
attain additional service retirement benefits serves the dual purpose of
allowing the county to retain needed, experienced correction officer
personnel, as well as rewarding such officers for their additional
service to the county beyond their eligibility for retirement.
