TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the general business law and the administrative code of
the city of New York, in relation to requiring storage warehouse opera-
tors to maintain lock boxes for storage of official documents in each
rental unit
 
PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL:
The bill provides a separate lock box within storage units for renters
to store official government documents. In instances of non-payment,
this bill prevents storage warehouse operators from retaining, disposing
of, or auctioning the contents of the separate lock box.
 
SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS:
Section 1: amends the general business law byadding a new section 607-b.
Section 2: amends section 20-477 of the administrative code of the city
of New York. Section 3: provides the effective date.
 
JUSTIFICATION:
Preventing storage warehouse operators from retaining, disposing, or
auctioning official government documents belonging to renters ensures
protection of individuals' sensitive information and legal documents.
This safeguards privacy, prevents identity theft, and upholds the legal
rights of renters, fostering trust and adherence to privacy regulations.
This also prevents renters from having to experience lengthy processes
to replace their official government documents.
