TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the criminal procedure law, in relation to the statute
of limitations for certain assault offenses committed against a member
of the same family or household
 
PURPOSE:
To increase the statute of limitation for assault one against an inti-
mate partner.
 
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1. Subdivision 3 of section 30.10 of the criminal procedure law
is amended by adding a new paragraph (i) to increase the statute of
limitations to 10 years when assault one is made against a domestic
partner.
Section 2. Sets forth an immediate effect date.
 
JUSTIFICATION:
As we all know, victims of domestic violence deal with many physical and
emotional barriers. Extending the statute of limitation gives them the
necessary time to heal, overcome fear and gain the strength to seek
justice.
This bill is a commonsense effort to hopefully assist in combatting
domestic violence.
