TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the education law, in relation to establishing a SUNY
four-year college of engineering and applied sciences in the city of
Yonkers
 
PURPOSE:
The purpose of this bill is to authorize and direct the trustees of the
State University of New York to create and establish within the State
University system, subject to the jurisdiction of such Board of Trus-
tees, a four-year college of engineering and applied sciences in the
City of Yonkers.
 
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1 of the bill amends the Education Law to add the College of
Engineering and Applied Sciences at Yonkers to the list of institutions
that make up the State University of New York.
Section 2 authorizes the trustees of the State University of New York to
immediately take actions to create and establish within the state
university system, a college of engineering and applied sciences as a
four-year state university of New York in the city of Yonkers. It also
lists particular majors which the school must offer.
Section 3 is the effective date.
 
JUSTIFICATION:
The City of Yonkers is the third largest city in the State of New York.
Three of the five largest cities - Buffalo, Syracuse, and Rochester -
have various established institutions of higher learning. Yonkers,
however, does not house any major public universities or State Universi-
ty of New York (SUNY) sites. This legislation aims to afford the resi-
dents of Yonkers, and surrounding municipalities, an opportunity to
attend an outstanding institution of higher learning.
