TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the veterans' services law, in relation to defining
veteran
 
PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL:
To amend the definition of a veteran to include those who served a full
career in the New York naval militia and/or New York Guard.
 
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section one amends the veterans' services law by amending the definition
of a veteran to include individuals who served in the New York guard or
New York Naval Militia for at least twenty years, part of which was
during any war or period of hostilities.
Section two sets the effective date.
 
JUSTIFICATION:
The New York guard and Naval militia are an integral part of keeping our
residents safe. They provide support and services at times of need.
Including in the definition of a veteran under the veterans' services
law allows them to access benefits they deserve. By passing this legis-
lation, we can recognize them for their important service to the State
of New York.

This act shall take effect immediately.
