TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of
the state highway system the "Trooper Fabio Buttitta Memorial Bridge"
 
PURPOSE:
Designates all that portion of the state highway system constituting the
Bridge over the Southern State Parkway on Bay Shore Road in the Town of
Islip, County of Suffolk, shall be designated and known as "Trooper
Fabio Buttitta Memorial Bridge"
 
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1: Amends the highway law by adding a new section 344-n.
Section 2: States that the commissioner of transportation shall provide
for the installation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state
highway systems as designated pursuant to section 1 of this act. The
designation will be for ceremonial purposes only, and the official name
of the bridge will not be changed as a result of this act.
Section 3: Provides the effective date.
 
JUSTIFICATION:
Trooper Fabio Buttitta, Shield 1990, was born on April 30, 1966 in
Brooklyn, NY. His family later moved to Long Island, NY and he graduated
from Nassau County Community College. Tropper Buttitta became a New York
State Trooper in 1994 and was first assigned to Troop K. He later trans-
ferred to Troop L to be near his parents and siblings with whom he was
very close. His vibrant personality and positive attitude was infectious
to all who has the pleasure of meeting him. Trooper Buttitta's life was
taken by a drunk driver on Aug. 24, 1997 in Bay Shore, NY while on the
way home from work after completing the night's DWI patrol. This legis-
lation is to pay tribute to Trooper Fabio Buttitta honorable and heroic
service.
