TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the education law, in relation to authorizing grants for
the implementation of the seal of civic readiness program
PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL:
An Act to amend education law, in relation to authorizing grants for the
implementation of the seal of civic readiness program.
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
This competitive grant will provide critical logistical support to
awarded schools around the state for effective implementation of the
State Education Department's Seal of Civic Readiness + 1 Civics Pathway.
JUSTIFICATION:
It is critical, now more than ever, that NYS students are equipped and
prepared to constructively engage in civics. Civic literacy and positive
community participation are the cornerstones for effective citizenship.
The Board of Regents and the State Education Department provide the
framework for schools to develop a rich, engaging, and meaningful
program. However, many schools lack the financial resources to launch
this impor- tant initiative. Teaching and support staff, professional
and staff development as well as creating community partnerships are
crucial components of a successful program. This competitive grant,
developed and administered by the Commissioner of Education, will award
20 exemplary school applications $50,000 each to launch or sustain their
award-winning programs.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS FOR STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS:
An additional $1 million appropriated to the State Education Department.
EFFECTIVE DATE:
Upon adoption of the SFY 25-26 budget
