TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the county law, in relation to mandatory continuing
education requirements for coroners and coroner's deputies
PURPOSE:
To require that coroners and coroner deputies, whether elected or
appointed, shall complete a state-approved course in medical-legal
investigation.
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1 states that there will be a training requirement for coroners
and coroner's deputies, they shall successfully complete the training.
The coroner or coroner deputy wilt cover the cost. However, at the
discretion of the county they may be reimbursed for alt or a portion of
that training fee.
Also, the coroner or coroner deputy shall attend and successfully
compete no less than 30 credits in a state-approved medical legal inves-
tigation courses over a 3-year period. Additionally, each coroner and
coroner deputy shall be exempt from the training for one year following
their appointment.
Section 2 establishes the effective date.
JUSTIFICATION:
Currently, New York State does not require a continued education class
for coroners or coroner deputies. This bill would allow them to keep up
with the changing science of medical-legal investigation to excel and
continue to do the excellent work that they do in the community. This
was at the request of the New York State Association of County Coroners
and Medical Examiners (NYSACCME).

This act shall take effect on the one hundred eightieth day after it
shall have become a law
