BILL NUMBER: S3247
SPONSOR: COONEY

TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the public authorities law, in relation to electric
vehicle charging stations

SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS:
Section 1 amends subdivision 9-a of public authorities law to require
that the power authority, in consultation with the energy and research
development authority, the department of transportation, and any other
relevant state or local agency or department, require that all newly
constructed electric vehicle charging stations available for public use
which are capable of accepting payment accept all major credit cards.
Section 2 is the effective date.

JUSTIFICATION:
The transition from gas powered to electric vehicles is becoming more
prevalent as we implement more climate friendly alternatives in lieu of
a dependence on fossil fuels in New York State. Currently, available
forms of payment at electric vehicle charging stations are made through
mobile applications or by a subscription. By increasing the accepted
methods of payment, this bill would provide more accessibility and
options for electric vehicle owners.
