TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to the
restrictions on class DJ and class MJ licenses in the counties of Nassau
and Suffolk by permitting such licensees to drive to and from school
between the hours of five in the morning to nine o'clock in the evening
 
PURPOSE:
To permit holders of class DJ and class MJ licenses to drive directly to
and from school during the hours of 5:00 am and 9:00 pm in Nassau and
Suffolk counties upon completion of six hours of in car instruction by a
licensed drivers' school.
 
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1. Amends subdivision 3 of section 501 of the vehicle and traf-
fic law to permit holders of class DJ and class MJ licenses to drive
directly to and from school during the hours of 5:00 am and 9:00 pm upon
completion of six hours of in car instruction by a licensed drivers'
school in Nassau and Suffolk counties.
Section 2. Sets for the effective date.
 
JUSTIFICATION:
Holders of a junior driver's license may drive in Nassau and Suffolk
counties between the hours of 5:00 am and 9:00 pm without a supervising
driver only directly between their home and 1) their employment 2) a
state-approved cooperative work-study educational program 3) an approved
program for credit in a post-secondary institution 4) a state-approved
registered evening high school 5) while engaged in farm employment and
6) an approved driver education course. This legislation is necessary to
expand upon these provisions and permit a holder of a class DJ or class
MJ license to drive directly between their home and their school without
a supervising driver in the counties of Nassau and Suffolk upon
completion of six hours of in car instruction by a licensed drivers'
school.
