TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the executive law, in relation to prohibiting police
officers from carrying or using a firearm during any phase of the offi-
cer's official duties unless the officer has satisfactorily completed a
course of training that meets or exceeds the minimum standards estab-
lished by the municipal police training council
 
PURPOSE OF THE BILL:
To amend the executive law to require annual firearms training for
police officers who carry or use firearms during their official duties.
 
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS::
The bill amends the executive law to add a new section establishing this
legislative requirement.
 
JUSTIFICATION::
Currently, there is no legislative requirement under the executive law
for police officers to complete a course of training in firearms and the
use of deadly physical force. The bill creates this legislative require-
ment.

LOCAL IMPACT:
The cost to the local municipality will be dependent on the number of
officers employed by the police department of that municipality.

law.
