BILL NUMBER: S2073
SPONSOR: SCARCELLA-SPANTON

TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law and the veterans' services
law, in relation to requiring the department of motor vehicles share
certain veteran information with the department of veterans' services

SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1. Amends the vehicle and traffic law to define veterans in a
way consistent with the veterans' services law and directs the depart-
ment to create and maintain a list of veterans who apply for veteran
driver's license. This list will assist the veterans' services and will
be updated by the department as necessary to ensure the list is current.
Section 2. Amends the veterans' services law to direct the department to
coordinate their outreach efforts by using the veteran's information
provided to them by the department of motor vehicles.

JUSTIFICATION:
As veterans return from active duty, they have the potential to face
difficulties adjusting to their civilian life. With that in mind, veter-
ans' services require as much information as possible to ensure that
they are reaching out to as many veterans as possible for the resources
for which they are eligible. Being that the Department of Motor Vehicles
stands as a comprehensive database for New York State, it would prove
immensely beneficial for the procedures of veterans' services to have
access to information that indicates that there is a veteran that they
can help.
