BILL NUMBER: S1975
SPONSOR: MURRAY
TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the general municipal law, in relation to requiring
identification numbers to be displayed on certain buildings
PURPOSE:
To require identification numbers to be displayed on certain buildings
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1. Establishes legislative intent and purpose.
Section 2. Amends general municipal law to require street numbers on
buildings to be plainly legible from the sidewalk in front of such
building; authorizes fines for violators
Section 3. Establishes effective date.
JUSTIFICATION:
Many tragedies have occurred as a result of crime, accidents, illnesses
and fires due to the fact that emergency personnel, such as police,
firefighters and paramedics are unable to ascertain the location of the
emergency. This legislation would require that large, clear address
numbers be affixed prominently on the face of all buildings and resi-
dences which have such numbers assigned, thereby eliminating the
precious time lost that occurs when a building is not clearly marked.
LEGISLATIVE HISTORY:
S4980 reported from Local Government and referred to Finance
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS:
None.
EFFECTIVE DATE:
On the ninetieth day after becoming law.
