BILL NUMBER: S1687
SPONSOR: SKOUFIS

TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the election law, in relation to moving the date of the
presidential primary to the same date as the state primaries

PURPOSE:
To consolidate the presidential primary to the same date as the already
scheduled federal, state, and local primaries on the fourth Tuesday in
June.

SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1: Amends section 8-100 of the Election Law to move the presi-
dential primary election to the fourth Tuesday in June.
Section 2: Sets effective date.

JUSTIFICATION:
This legislation will permanently move the presidential primary to the
fourth Tuesday in June, the same date as the already scheduled federal,
state, and local primaries. Consolidating the primaries to a single date
in June will save millions of dollars by avoiding the need to hold two
primaries in less than two months. Additionally, having the primaries on
the same day will likely increase voter turnout.
