BILL NUMBER: S1525
SPONSOR: MAY
TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the executive law, in relation to providing technical
assistance to any municipality that has had a college or university
close within such municipality
PURPOSE:
To provide more support and technical assistance from the state to muni-
cipalities experiencing college closures.
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Amends the executive law to require the departments of state, economic
development, and education to provide technical assistance upon request
of a municipality experiencing a college closure to address issues
related to such transition.
JUSTIFICATION:
Though they are thankfully rare, the closure of a college can have
devastating effects on a community. With many communities in New York
State serving as home to the faculty, students, and workers of a
college, and their economies strongly tied to these institutions, the
potential negative impacts can be many. This legislation will help local
governments experiencing such closures tap into the state's expertise in
planning, economic development, and more to develop a strategy to
address such closures in the unfortunate event of such a closure.
