BILL NUMBER: S1376
SPONSOR: SERRANO

TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the parks, recreation and historic preservation law, in
relation to farmers' markets in state and local parks

PURPOSE:
The purpose of this legislation is to increase the number of available
locations for farmers' markets and increase New Yorker's access to
locally grown and produced food.

SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1 - Amends section 3.09 of the parks, recreation and historic
preservation law by adding a new subdivision 24 which directs the Office
of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) to encourage and
promote farmer's markets at state parks provided that the market does
not harm the natural environment or integrity of the park.
Section 2 - Effective Date - Immediately. JUSTIFICATION: New Yorkers
are seeking more avenues to access farm fresh products at the same time
farmers are seeking new markets to offer their products. One method to
connect buyers with producers is through farmers' markets. Farmers'
markets often struggle to find locations that accommodate both visitors
and purveyors. This bill will provide a remedy to this problem by
directing OPRHP to promote State Parks as locations for the establish-
ment of farmers' markets.
