TITLE OF BILL:
An act relating to authorizing the village of Canton to reduce the speed
limit on certain public roadways
PURPOSE:
Allows the Village of Canton to lower the speed limit to 40 on East Main
Street in the village.
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1: Pursuant to section 1643 of the vehicle and traffic law, this
legislation allows the Village of Canton in the Town of Canton to lower
its speed limit to 40 MPH on East Main Street in the village should they
establish such speed limit by local law, ordinance, order, rule or regu-
lation.
Section 2: Provides the effective date.
JUSTIFICATION:
This legislation, which is at the request of the Village of Canton,
would lower the speed limit on East Main Street in the village. This
legislation empowers home rule to this municipality to lower the speed
of this road. Canton has had numerous accidents including automobiles
and pedestrians on this road that runs in front of the village medical
center, and this legislation is necessary to preserve the safety of the
residents of the Canton community.
