BILL NUMBER: S1204
SPONSOR: CLEARE

TITLE OF BILL:
An act directing the metropolitan transportation authority and the New
York city transit authority to rename the 110th Street - Central Park
North subway station to the 110th Street - Malcolm X Plaza station; and
providing for the repeal of such provisions upon expiration thereof

PURPOSE:
This legislation will name the MTA Station that sits below Malcolm
Shabazz Plaza after Malcolm X.

SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS:
This bill provides for the remaining of the MTA Station that sits below
Malcolm Shabazz Plaza after Malcolm X.

JUSTIFICATION:
The current 110th Street-Central Park North subway station is located at
the origin of Malcolm X Boulevard and sits squarely underneath Malcolm
Shabazz Plaza. The tiling of the Subway Station already pays tribute to
Malcolm X, as does a number of pieces of artwork, installed during a
1998 renovation, called Message from Malcolm by Maren Hassinger. It
consists of mosaic panels on the platform and main fare control area's
street stairs that depict quotes and writings by Malcolm X written in
script and surrounded by mosaic borders. Given this confluence of
factors, the MTA should rename the Station to bear the name of the
preeminent Civil Rights Crusader, Malcolm X.

LEGISLATIVE HISTORY:

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS:

EFFECTIVE DATE:
This act shall take effect immediately.
