BILL NUMBER: S669
SPONSOR: JACKSON
TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the education law, in relation to requiring a traffic
study as part of an application to establish a charter school
PURPOSE:
Requires a traffic study as part of an application to establish a char-
ter school.
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1 of the bill would amend Paragraph (j) of subdivision 2 of
section 2851 of the education law to require a traffic study that evalu-
ates the potential impact of the proposed charter school on traffic
patterns, safety and congestion in the surrounding area.
Section 2 would set the effective date.
JUSTIFICATION:
Charter schools have become an increasingly popular alternative to
traditional public schools, with many parents and educators embracing
the flexibility and innovation that they offer. However, the establish-
ment of a charter school can also have significant impacts on traffic
patterns and congestion in the surrounding area, particularly during
drop-off and pick-up times.
By requiring a traffic study as part of the charter school application
process, this bill would ensure that these impacts are carefully evalu-
ated and considered. The results of the study would help to identify any
potential safety risks and inform decisions about traffic management
strategies, such as staggered drop-off and pick-up times, additional
signage or traffic lights, and improvements to pedestrian and bicycle
infrastructure.
This bill is important for ensuring the safety and well-being of
students, parents, and other members of the community, as well as for
promoting responsible and sustainable development.
