BILL NUMBER: S520
SPONSOR: PERSAUD
TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the public health law, in relation to ensuring ovarian
cancer survivors have the right to access screenings for health condi-
tions
PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL:
The purpose of the bill is to expand preventative health care to
patients with a personal or faMily history of ovarian cancer.
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1 of the bill adds a new 4 2404-e to the public health law to
ensure patients with a history of ovarian cancer have the right to
health screenings to improve their health care in regard to ovarian
cancer.
Section 2 of the bill provides the effective date.
JUSTIFICATION:
Cancer survivors are incredibly strong and resilientpe:Jpi.e that over-
came a deadly disease. Yet just because they overcame a disease does not
mean that they cannot get cancer again. One's genetics can increase the
likelihood of getting cancer, as well as cancer treatments like chemoth-
erapy, as the immune system is weakened. Because of this, it is essen-
tial. that cancer survivors be given the right to health screening
considering they can be more vulnerable to getting the disease again.
Cancer survivors have already gone through the pain and tribulations of
overcoming the deadly disease; they should have the right to get preven-
tative care due to the potential higher likelihood of them getting
cancer once again.
