BILL NUMBER: S268
SPONSOR: HARCKHAM

TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the social services law, in relation to including
implantable infusion pumps for chronic non-cancer pain management as
standard coverage for medical assistance

PURPOSE:
This bill seeks to include implantable fusion pumps for chronic non-
cancer pain management.

SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1 amends section 365-a of the social services law by adding a
new paragraph (nn) which adds implantable infusion pumps for chronic
non-cancer pain as qualified for standard coverage.
Section 2 states the effective date.

JUSTIFICATION:
In light of the current opioid epidemic in New York, this bill seeks to
include implantable fusions pumps as standard coverage for chronic non-
cancer pain management. Implantable infusion pumps are devices surgical-
ly inserted under the skin which then sends liquid pain medication to
specific parts of the body. Adding implantable infusion pumps as stand-
ard coverage would help deter improper opioid use by giving doctors an
alternative pain management option for chronic non-cancer patients that
can not be abused.
