TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the highway law, in relation to dedicating a portion of
the state highway system to "Trooper Edward J. Sweeney"
 
PURPOSE:
To honor the life and ultimate sacrifice of New York State Police Troop-
er Edward J. Sweeney by designating the portion of the state highway
system constituting the Merrick Rd overpass on The Meadowbrook State
Parkway in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County, NY as the "State Troop-
er Edward J. Sweeney Memorial Bridge."
 
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section one adds a new section 344-r portion of the state highway system
designating the "State Trooper Edward J. Sweeney Memorial." All that
portion of the state highway system constituting the bridge on the
Meadowbrook State Parkway at the exit M10 Loop Parkway overpass in the
Town of Hempstead, Nassau County, shall be dedicated to "State Trooper
Edward J. Sweeney."
2 requires the commissioner of the Department of Transportation to
provide for the installation and maintenance of adequate signage.
Section 3 establishes the effective date.
 
JUSTIFICATION:
Trooper Edward J. Sweeney was killed on May 17, 1930 when his motorcycle
collided with a truck on Sunrise Highway near Babylon Tpke in Nassau
County. At the time of the accident, he was en-route to Freeport from
the Wantagh Station for administrative duty. Trooper Sweeney was a
7-month veteran of the State Police assigned to the Jones Beach detail.
He was the first member of the State Police assigned to newly estab-
lished Troop "L" to die in the line of duty.
